Medicare’s Home Health Compare data was first released to the public in July of 2015,  The quality of patient care star rating summarizes 9 of the 29 quality measures reported on Home Health Compare. It provides a single indicator of an agency’s performance compared to other agencies. CMS HOME HEALTH COMPARE Star Rating Process and Outcomes:

  • A 4- or 5-star rating means that the agency performed better than other agencies on the 9 measured care practices and outcomes.
  • A 1- or 2-star rating means that the agency’s average performance on the 9 measured care practices and outcomes was below the averages of other agencies.
  • Across the country, most agencies fall “in the middle” with 3 or 3½ stars.

  • WHAT DOES THE 9 QUALITY PATIENT CARE STAR RATING INCLUDE ?

    What do the quality of patient care star rating’s measure?

    The quality of patient care star rating is a summary measure of agency performance based on how well a home health agency performs on 9 of the individual quality measures reported on Home Health Compare.

    The process of care measures – How often the agency?

    1. Initiated patient care in a timely manner
    2. Provided patient/caregiver drug education on all medications
    3. Ensure patients received flu vaccine for the current season

    The outcome of care measures – How often the patient’s improved?

    1.  Ambulation walking or moving around
    2.  Bed transfer  getting in and out of bed
    3.  Bathing and Measuring the (ADL)Activities of Daily 
    4.  Pain interfering with activity with less pain
    5.  Experienced less shortness of breath
    6.  Required acute care hospitalization

  • WHERE DO THE QUALITY OF PATIENT CARE STAR RATINGS COMPOSED OF?

    The quality of patient care star ratings are calculated using each home health agency’s scores on 9 individual quality measures, which are based on home health agency patient assessments and Medicare claims. Get information about the time period on which the current star ratings are based.

  • WHICH HOME HEALTH AGENCIES GET QUALITY OF PATIENT CARE STAR RATINGS?

    Currently, home health agencies must have at least 20 complete quality episodes for data on a measure to be reported on Home Health Compare. (Completed episodes are paired start or resumption of care and end of care OASIS assessments.) Episodes must have a discharge date within the 12-month reporting period regardless of admission date. To have a quality of patient care star rating computed, home health agencies must have reported data for 5 of the 9 measures used in the star rating calculation.

  • HOW OFTEN ARE THE QUALITY OF PATIENTS CARE STAR RATINGS UPDATED?

    The quality of patient care star ratings is updated quarterly, at the same time the data on the individual quality measures are updated. This means the quality of patient care star rating for each home health agency may change from one-quarter to the next.
