Medicare is government-sponsored health care coverage for seniors and the disabled. It offers different ways for people to choose their coverage so individuals can pick a plan that fits their needs best, based on cost, benefits, doctor choice, convenience and quality.

• Medicare Part A covers hospital stays, emergency care, skilled nursing facilities, hospice and home health care, if certain conditions are met.
• Medicare Part B covers doctor’s visits and some routine preventive care.
• Medicare Part C also known as a Medicare Advantage Plan, is managed by private insurance companies approved by Medicare and combines Part A and B coverage.
• Medicare Part D helps cover the cost of prescription drugs.

Patients of Assure can use the benefits of Medicare to help cover the cost of home health care services. If you have Medicare, you may receive services from Assure at no cost to you. Some patients may choose to use a replacement plan or Medicare Advantage plan, which may involve a deductible or co-pay.

Traditional Medicare will pay 100% for home health services when the following conditions are met:

• Medicare eligible
• Homebound
• Plan of Care (485)
• Care is intermittent and part-time
• Doctor’s orders
• Documentation of all services

Many Illinoisans with Medicare can save up to $1,320 each year by participating in Medicare Savings Programs. These programs may help pay Medicare premiums, so individuals can keep more of their social security checks. For an overview on applying for Medicare Savings Programs and a list of Frequently Asked Questions, visit Illinois Benefits. The Illinois Department on Aging helps older adults live independently in their own homes and communities. As the population ages, services and programs for older adults must evolve as well because longevity means more when quality of life is enhanced.

To best serve older adults, we must also serve their families and teach younger people about the realities of aging, so many of our programs have an inter-generational emphasis. Working with Area Agencies on Aging, community-based service providers and older adults themselves, the Illinois Department on Aging strives to improve quality of life for current and future generations of older Illinoisans.

Elder Abuse Prevention
As the number of older adults in the United States has increased, so has the incidence of elder abuse, neglect and financial exploitation. Professionals across the field of aging are seeking tools, information, and resources to help them expand their capacity to identify and stop elder abuse.

This includes preventing abuse, neglect or exploitation from ever occurring and, in the worst cases, serving those who have been victims of abuse, neglect or exploitation. Advocates who are working to bring this epidemic to the attention of local, state and federal policy makers also require the latest research and resources to aid their efforts.
